7 Must-Have Qualities to Look for in Employees

While every hiring decision is important, the smaller your business the more important it is you hire the right people. When employee No. 300 turns out to be a disaster, the impact on the business is relatively small and often confined to a small group of staff.

When employee No. 3 turns out to be a disaster, everyone—and everything—suffers.

That's why attitude is everything. You can teach skills, but it's nearly impossible to teach and instill enthusiasm, teamwork and independence (great employees have both), and motivation.

And that’s why great small business employees:

Can come across a little different. People who are quirky, sometimes irreverent, and happy to be different may seem a little out there, but in a really good way. An employee who isn’t afraid to stand out or stretch boundaries often comes up with the best ideas—and helps you think in different ways, too.

May lack polish but overflow with personality. Think about your favorite customers, vendors, or suppliers. What typically comes to mind first? Those people are personable, friendly, outgoing, and make your day a little more fun. Look for the same qualities in the people you hire. Customers buy more and build longer-term relationships from people they like.

Think, “I’ll do whatever you need. It’s all 8 hours to me." I first heard that expression when I asked an employee to help me clean up after a backed-up sewer line spread (incredibly unpleasant) fluid across the warehouse floor. He smiled and said, "Sure. It's all 8 hours to me."

He felt he was paid to work for 8 hours, so the tasks he performed during that time period didn't matter (in a good way). Great employees are willing to do whatever it takes. Great employees are more concerned with overall objectives and goals than their individual duties.

Possess one outstanding skill. Small businesses have a variety of specific needs: Running the website, processing orders, generating leads, etc. Many roles can be outsourced. If you have the choice, only bring roles in-house because the candidate is truly outstanding.

Aren’t concerned with job descriptions or organizational structures. To a business owner a prospective employee who asks to see a detailed job description is waving a giant red flag. Employees are paid to work, not hold a position. (If you don't feel there's a difference you haven't run a small business.)

Want to learn and take over. You're often overwhelmed, so having the luxury to delegate and forget is extremely valuable. While employees with an independent streak can be more difficult to manage the payoff is definitely worth it.

Asked you for a job. Say you sell products online. One day a college senior walks in and says, "I checked out your website. I don’t mean to be rude, but it could be a lot better. I graduate soon and would love to work for you. Here’s a list of the changes I would make in the first three months, and here’s a breakdown of how those changes will improve SEO results and conversion rates. She’s targeted her approach, she’s done her homework, and she’s displayed a level of initiative every business owner hopes to find. While a prospective employee will rarely knock on your door, when one does, give her serious consideration.

Hari pertama penerbangan dari KL terus ke Amman Jordan yang telah mengambil masa hampir 12 jam. Bertolak pada jam 10 malam waktu KL dan tiba di Amman jam 5.30 pagi waktu Amman. Setibanya di Amman, kami terus transit ke Beirut Int Airport dan mengambil masa hanya sejam.

Kami terus dibawa ke Deir El-Qamar dimana kami dapat ziarah istana Emir Bechir Chehab II. Lokasi yang berbukit bukau ini menempatkan masyarakat majmuk yang terdiri daripada masyarakat Muslim Sunni, Syiah dan Kristian. Kelihatan juga beberapa bangunan yang merupakan bekas peninggalan perang Lebanon Israel tahun 90-an. Kami dibawa ke gerai buah-buahan. 1 kilo anggur harganya hanya USD 1, bersamaan RM3 sahaja!

Selesai ziarah di Deir El-Qamar, kami terus dibawa ke bandar Beirut untuk check in di Hotel Napoleon sebelum makan malam di situ.

Overworked? 4 Signs You Need to Recharge

Sometimes it’s obvious we need a break, but in most cases we figure it out too late. When you work double-digit hours and Sundays are no longer a day of rest, feeling overworked can become the new normal. Even so you’ll eventually hit a wall, and when that happens it can take days and even weeks to recover the enthusiasm, creativity, and motivation you’ve lost.

Fortunately a few of the same techniques endurance athletes use to detect the need for additional recovery can be used to indicate when you need to recharge your work batteries. Where elite athletes are concerned, chronic overtraining can actually defeat the fitness purpose and result in decreased stamina, power, and speed; sometimes the harder they work the slower they get.

The same thing happens to us when we’re overworked. We put in more hours to compensate… and get even less done. So how can you tell the difference between feeling overworked and really overworking yourself?

I asked Jeremiah Bishop for some simple techniques anyone can use to avoid hitting a wall. Jeremiah is a professional mountain bike rider for Cannondale Factory Racing. He's a twelve-time member of the U.S. national team and is to mountain bike racing what an NBA All-Star is to basketball (except he’s currently not out on strike).

Here are ways to ensure you stay at your professional best:
Check your resting heart rate. Every day, before you get out of bed, take your pulse. (There are plenty of free apps that make it easy. Some even log results.) Most of the time your heart rate will stay within a few beats per minute. But when you’re overworked and stressed your body sends more oxygen to your body and brain by increasing your heart rate. (The same thing happens when athletes overtrain and their bodies struggle to recover.) If your heart rate is up in the morning, do whatever it takes to get a little extra rest or sleep that night.

Check your emotions. Having a bad day? Feeling irritable and short-tempered? If you can’t put your finger on a specific reason why, chronic stress and fatigue may have triggered a physiological response and sent more cortisol and less dopamine to your brain. Willing yourself to be in a better mood won’t overcome the impact of chemistry, and in extreme cases the only cure is a break.

Check your weight. Lose or gain more than a percent of body weight from one day to the next and something’s wrong. Maybe yesterday was incredibly stressful and you failed to notice you didn’t eat and drink enough… or maybe you failed to notice just how much you actually ate. Lack of nourishment and hydration can put the hurt on higher-level mental functions (which may be why when we’re overworked and feeling stressed we instinctively want to perform routine, less complex tasks.) And eating too much food—well, we all know the impact of that.

Check your, um, output. Urine color can indicate a lack of hydration (although sometimes it indicates you created really expensive urine after eating a ton of vitamins your body could not absorb.) The lighter the color the more hydrated you are. Hydration is a good thing. Proper hydration aids the absorption of nutrients and helps increase energy levels. If your urine is darker than usual the cure is simple: Drink a lot of water.

The key is to monitor each of these over a period of time so you develop a feel for what is normal for you. Pay special attention on weekends and vacations, and if you notice a dramatic change, especially a positive one, that’s a sure sign you need to change your workday routine.

Don’t say this sounds like something only elite athletes need to worry about. We all want to be the best we can possibly be, no matter what our profession, and whenever we slam into the workload wall we are far from our best.

And don’t say you don’t have the time to take a short break or get a little more sleep. You owe it to yourself to find a way.

Eventually your mind and your body will hit a wall and make you, so why not do take care of yourself, and improve your performance, on your terms?

Nasi Tomato Batu Lanchang is one of the must have if you're in Penang. One of my friend told me that its also known as nasi tomato Mak Esah Buncit, but I'm not really sure weather its true or not. My first time having this nasi tomato was a blast! The fried chicken was initially cooked using woods than only with gas.

It is open daily from 12am (in the morning!) and closed normally around 2 or 3am. As early as 11.30pm people had already started queing to get the nasi tomato. Besides fried chicken, you can get beef, fish eggs and other as well. So if you're planning to come to Penang, this is another stop and should be put in your diary!

Speech for the closing remark of the Musabaqah Hafazan with the Somali community and Fast 2 Feed program organized by Muslim Aid Malaysia Humanitarian Foundation. 10 August 2011.

Assalamualaikum wrb and good evening. Welcome to the Salahuddin al-Ayubi Mosque to you, to all Somali community, and to all the invited guest in the hall, I extend my best wishes on this holy month. Ramadhan Kareem. I want to welcome members of the Salahuddin al-Ayubi Mosque, Haji Bakhtiar, members of Muslim Aid Malaysia Humanitarian Foundation; and Members of the Somali Community Learning Center, including Mr. Fattah, Mr Ahmad and others.

We, from Muslim Aid, we have a tradition of hosting iftars that goes back several years that we called it Fast 2 Feed, or in short F2F. These events, give the opportunity for the people to sponsor our fellow Muslims such as the orphans, the poor family, disabled, single mother and even the refugees to break fast. These remind us of the basic truth that we are all the servant of Allah, and we all draw strength and a sense of purpose from our beliefs.

These events are also an affirmation of who we are as a Malaysian, a symbol of unity. Muslim Aid understood that the best way to honour our fellow Muslim, especially the Somali community in Malaysia is to be with them as part of our own society in Malaysia, helping hand in hand in education and other community development programs.

Our Founder, Yusuf Islam or popularly known as Cat Stevens understood that the best way to honor the place of faith in the lives of our people was to help people who are suffering. Yusuf Islam said that “It is part of my faith as a Muslim to try to help those who are suffering from poverty or economic or political injustice.” And that is where Muslim Aid started in London back in 1984.

Indeed, over the course of Muslim Aid history, humanitarian program has flourished within our borders precisely because every human being, not only the Muslims, but all have the rights to have better education and a proper place to live.

This is not to say that the refugee is without controversy in Malaysia. We all know that currently Malaysia is not a signatory for the UN refugee convention, but through the continuous effort from other organizations such as the UNHCR and Muslim Aid, we strive to help the refugees community have a better place to live, especially in Malaysia. We will try our best to raise funds and come out with quality program in order to make the Somali community part of the Malaysian community itself.

Tonight, we are reminded that Ramadhan is a celebration of a faith known for great diversity. And Ramadhan is a reminder that Islam has always been in our heart. The Musabaqah al-Quran which is held today is a step encouragement for youths and others to actively read and understand the Quran and at the same time to become a pious, quality and excellent youth through the wide teachings of Al-Quran such as the rule of prayers and repentance.

The Rasulullah SAW said, "The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur'an will be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur'an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have a double reward.''

Last but not least, I would like to thank everyone who is involved from the organizer itself, the donors who trust in us, in making the Musabaqah al-Quran event a reality. Malaysia vs Arsenal 2011!

At last, I manage to grab 3 Malaysia vs Arsenal free match tickets at the Harian Metro HQ just in front of my office. People coming to queue up as early as 8 in the morning where the tickets were only available at 10am. 1000 RM69 tickets were available for grab and people would only need to bring 14 head post from either the Harian Metro, Berita Harian or News Straits Times. One person is entitle for only one ticket and one training session admission pass. Luckily I manage to call my collegue to come and help me get the tickets since I had 3 set of head post to redeam 3 tickets. By 12pm, all the tickets were finished!

Hari keempat Char Kuey Tiow Bom

Semalam sudah masuk hari keempat Char Kuey Tiow Bom dibuka di Keramat. Selama empat hari menjaga gerai char koey tiow ini, banyak juga benda yang belajar. Saya ditugaskan membuat air, Azry rakan sekolah sebagai chef dan Taufik juga rakan sekolah bertanggungjawab untuk mengambil order.

Sekarang, setiap hari balik kerja, saya terus ke Keramat untuk memulakan kerjaya sampingan di waktu malam. Pengalaman menyediakan air ini pada awalnya bukanlah suatu yang mudah. Untuk sediakan milo ais, nescafe panas agak mudah, namun yang agak sukar ialah untuk menyukat teh, atau sediakan teh tarik tau teh ais. Penyediaan teh menggunakan sarung penapis teh, dan air teh yang pekat perlu disukat dengan betul agar tidak tawar atau terlalu kelat.

Namun begitu, alhamdulillah, dari hari kehari, membuat teh menjadi agak mudah untuk disediakan. Warna asal teh perlu gelap dan ditambah dengan air panas sebelum meletakkan ais. Kini khemah juga dari asalnya dua sudah bertambah kepada empat buah. Perancangan seterusnya ialah untuk menambah meja dan kerusi.

Belum sampai seminggu lagi bisnes kecilan char kuey tiow. Harapan kami agar bisnes ini bertambah maju seperti bisnes-bisnes char kuey tiow yang lain. Amin!

Vacation: Kota Kinabalu Sabah, 3rd day

3rd day at Sabah.

After looking at several Mount Kinabalu packages, we manage to charter a mini bus that can fit 18 adults for only RM750 (8 hours including the tour guide). We did had several options such as a Totoya Hiace van that cost us RM400 per van. Or a bigger can like Nissan Urvan which cost RM700. The trip to Mount Kinabali will take about 2 to 3 hours so we decided to have the minibus, which was more comfortable since all of us were 11 adults, 2 children and 4 infants.

On the way to Mount Kinabalu, we stopped at Nabalu market to buy souviniors gift such as shirts, fridge magnets and key chains. We need to bargain to get good price and there are penty of choices for shirts compared to the Philiphines Markets. The price was a little bit higher compared to the Philiphines Markets.

We had our lunch at Sri Papar Restaurant, a Muslim own restaurant before making to the Hot Spring. The canopy walk and waterfall is located at the Hot Spring and it cost RM3 for locals to enter the place. The canopy walk was a 150 meter 'sky bridge' hanging from trees to trees and about more than 100 m in height. The canopy walk are not suitable for individuals with high blood pressure or heart attack.

Finally we went to Mount Kinabalu. We didn't actually go to the top but only at the bottom where there's an informative center on Mount Kinabalu. The scenerey was beautiful and thats why people would say, if you didn't visit the Mount Kinabalu, means you had never been to Sabah.

Vacation: Kota Kinabalu Sabah, 2nd day

Second day at Sabah.

We went to the jetty next to Pasar Filipin (Philippines Market) and a local guy approach us and offer us a package to the islands. We had options from the van driver and brochures from the airport for the islands package. We decided to take the package offered by the local guys since the way he deals with us is quite convincing. The price wa good, RM40 per person including trips to any two islands, snorkelling set. with life jacket.

Previously I did survey a few packages during the Matta Fair and the cost perperson for trip to the islands are mostly RM100 - RM200. But some of the packages includes barbeque. For us it would better to bring our own foods and two dozens of mineral water and just pay RM40 per person for the trip to two islands.

We snorkeled at Mamutik Island. The blue sea and corals were beautiful! We even bought bread to feed the fish. There were no signage stating don't feed the fish at Mamutik Island so it didn't stop us to feed the fishes except for Manukan Island that people are not allowed to feed the fish. We stayed at the island from 10am till 2pm before hopping to Manukan Island for another hour just for photo shoots. We went back to the mainland luckily it started to rain just after we reach the hotel.

Vacation: Kota Kinabalu Sabah, 1st day

My first time to Kota Kinabalu with my family and friends. About 11 adults, 2 children and 4 babies (5 family and 1 bachelor). Kota Kinabalu was our getaway after deciding from a few options on where to travel. The estimate cost to travel to Kota Kinabalu (flight and hotel only) for 2 adults and 1 baby is around RM700. Flights as usual we took Air Asia and for the accommodation we booked Cititel Express which cost us RM109 per night for a twin room (queen bed). Other expenses includes transportation, daily meals and shopping! Overall the total cost was around RM2000, depend on what you spend for shopping.

The first day we reach Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) noon around 1pm. We chartered two 10 seater van (Hiace and Preggio) to send us to the hotel. It cost us RM50 per van which was quite ok for us. The van is available at the airport. We reached Cititel Express in half hour time and immediately check in. The hotel was nice and clean. But the room was so small, that can only fit a queen bed without any refrigerator. The bathroom was clean. Hot and cold water were available just next to the lift outside the room.

After check in, all the wives stayed at the hotel to clean up and prepare milks for the babies while the men went out to search for suitable places for dining and ground trip. We had agreed for the second day to go for the island trip to Pulau Manukan dan Mamutik. I'll share on the package that we had for the island trip on my next post.

For dinner, we went to the night market, just next to the Philippines Market. The night markets open at 4.30pm. We were looking for seafood off course! There's so many option and with about 10 stalls selling seafood. We had dinner at one of the stalls which looks clean and tempting. We took grouper fish (ikan kerapu), Jenahak, 2 sets of prawns, 2 sets of squids and seaweeds. It cost us RM129 which is quite reasonable for dinner for 11 adults!

We as tourist need to know, the seafood can be considered as cheap, but the drinks at the seafood stall are quite expensive. But we had options, just next to the seafood stall, you can get many types of drinks which are at the normal price. Ice blended juice fruit might only cost RM2.50 and teh tarik around RM1.50. So get your drinks at the opposite stall and its ok to bring the drinks together for dinner. If you would like to try the drinks at the seafood stall, it will cost you like RM5 and above for every drink even if you're only taking coca cola! And remember, when ever you're choosing the seafood, try to bargain for the price. Normally a lobster or big prawn may cost you RM35, but you can get it for RM15 if you're good in bargaining. Make sure you check the price before paying for the foods.

End of day one.

Tips percutian sebelum menaiki kapal terbang

1- chewing gum
bawa sekali chewing gum dalam kapal terbang. Dengan mengunyah chewing gum, dapat mengelak dari mulut kering dan dahaga.

2- bawak porch bag atau beg kecil
untuk melepasi bahagian check in atau imigresen di lapangan terbang, segala barang dalam poket perlu dikeluarkan. Adalah lebih baik sekiranya semua barang di dalam poket seperti kunci, duit syiling, telefon bimbit di simpan di dalam porch bag. Passport dan boarding pass juga boleh disimpan dalam porch bag.

3- bawa bahan bacaan
Bahan bacaan seperti buku motivasi, novel atau majalah dapat dibaca semasa dalam kapal terbang. Penerbangan yang lama agak membosankan dan sebaiknya jika dapat diisi dengan membaca

4- mp3 atau ipod
Mp3 atau ipod juga berguna dengan "kill the time" semasa daam penerbangan. Mp3 ini boleh diisi dengan lagu-lagu kegemaran, ayat-ayat suci al-Quran atau ceramah-ceramah agama dan motivasi

5- kasut
Pastikan kasut yang dipakai adalah selesa seperti sandals atau lofer. Bagi saya, kasut sarung seperti lofer amat selesa kerana boleh ditanggalkan semasa dalam penerbangan

6- minyak wangi
Semasa berada di lapangan terbang, biasanya saya akan terus ke kedai bebas cukai yang menjual perfume, atau minyak wangi. Minyak wangi yang dibawa biasanya tidak boleh dibawa sebagai hand luggage. Oleh itu, di kedai minyak wangi bebas cukai, kita boleh sembur minyak wangi kegemaran menggunakan botol tester dibaju dan lengan.

7- air mineral dan makanan
Air mineral boleh dibeli di boarding area. Sebaiknya beli sebotol air mineral supaya dapat diminum semasa dalam kapal terbang. Bagi makanan pula, saya biasa bawa burger yang dibeli di McDonalds atau burger KFC dan disimpan di dalam porch bag. 7 April, its my birthday! And since I'm in Penang, I had my first birthday cake after 29 years! Well I'm glad I'm still young and yet to reach 30. My wife bought me a strawberry cake from Haagan Daz. My sister and his hubby gave a badminton racket, Yonex Armotec 900 with Lee Chong Wei signature, my brother gave me a gps, Garmin, can't remember the model and my parents gave me gold for me and my family's future investment. So on the same day, I went to Kuwait Finance House to open a gold account :) Thanks everyone who had been wishing me through Facebook, email and sms, I guess I had like more than 200 notification on birthday wishes!

My 1st Bali Trip Part II

Location: Bali ( Denpasar - Kuta - Tanah Lot - Kintamani - Sanur - Jimbaran - Ulukatu )

Accomodation: Holiday Villa Wina (RM150 perday, duluxe room)

Our 2nd day trip, we went to Kintamani to see the only volcano at Bali. On the way to the place, we stop by a coffee farm. It was a nice scenery uphill and we were offered to try taste a few hot drinks such as the ginger tea, ginger choc, Balinese coffee, lemon tea and plain chocolate. Its taste really good especially for the Balinese coffee. We also tried Luwak Coffee, which cost us IDR100k (RM35) per cup, but personally, I would prefer the Balinese coffee compared to the Luwak coffee.

What is Luwak Coffee? According to Wikipedia

Kopi luwak (Luak Coffee), or civet coffee, is one of the world's most expensive and low-production coffee. It is made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) and other related civets, then passed through its digestive tract. A civet eats the berries for their fleshy pulp. In its stomach, proteolytic enzymes seep into the beans, making shorter peptides and more free amino acids. Passing through a civet's intestines the beans are then defecated, keeping their shape. After gathering, thorough washing, sun drying, light roasting and brewing, these beans yield an aromatic coffee with much less bitterness, widely noted as the most expensive coffee in the world.

Its sound a little bit disgusting, but its one of the most expensie coffee in the world! We continued our trip to Kintamani to see the great view of the volcano. We had option either to have a buffet lunch that cost from IDR80k to IDR100k and one of the restaurant offered halal food. How do we know its halal? One is the halal logo from the Majlis Ulama Indonesia, and another one, normally a Muslim restaurant, they will have a Musollah (surau) in it as well.

Then we went down to see the paddy field (padi huma) before arriving at Ubud. You can experience the kampung lifestyles at Ubud and many spa and massage packages there. We went to visit another pura (temple) which requires us to wear the sarong as if we need to 'tutup aurat'. Most of the places in Bali will have their god's statue, almost 90% of the place have statues.

From Ubud, we went down south to Ulukatu to visit the Monkey Temple. The Monkey Temple is on a cliff with a nice view of the ocean. We were lucky that most of our trip didn't rain and we had the opportunity to visit many places. On the way back to Denpasar, we went to have dinner at a Nasi Padang restaurant before going back to KL the next morning. The nasi padang is unique. They will serve you all the foods on the table, and they will charge you on food that you eat only.

My 1st Bali Trip

It was my first trip to Bali with some old friends. We did get some good offer from Air Asia as we had booked our ticket about last 3 month back. The tickets cost us RM285 return perperson including airport tax at the LCCT. We arrived at Ngurah Rai International Airport at 9pm and went straight to the hotel. One of the hotel staff had greeted us at the airport.

For accomodation, we manage to get a good offer from a friend who is working as the GM for Holiday Villa Wina at Kuta. RM150 for duluxe room perday including breakfast (buffet). And the good part was the meal at Holiday Villa Wina is certified Halal by Majlis Ulama Indonesia! So no problem to get food for breakfast as we had heavy breakfast each day before starting our trip.

The 2nd day after breakfast we went to Kuta Beach. The wave was strong but not as strong as the one in Bondi Beach (Australia) but still ok for surfing. By comparing the beach in Kuta and in Batu Feringghi in Penang, I could say that the beach in Batu Feringghi Penang is better and cleaner. Only you can't get strong wave in Penang compared to Kuta Beach. One of the local people approach us and offered us to go surfing. They allowed us to rent their surf board which is IDR1.2 million (RM40) for 2 hours. I wish I could go surfing for the first time, but we already had plans to go to Tanah Lot and Jimbaran by today afternoon. After a while at the beach, we went back to the hotel to ride the free shuttle to Legion.

At Legion we went to get some souvenir like shirts, keychain and fridge magnet. Even the same thing, the price varies from IDR10k to IDR50k. So its better to survey and get the best price out of it. We manage to hire a supir (driver), Mas Choki. It cost about IDR400k including an MPV and petrol. It was quite a good bargain. The MPV was the Suzuki APV which is quite spacious and the driver was a Muslim. So we didn't had much problem on getting halal food over there.

We started our jouney to Tanah Lot to visit the floating temple or the called it Pura (temple). It was quite unique as the temple is only reachable when the sea level is low. Then we went to Jimbaran to experience the sun set. We were thinking of having dinner at Jimbaran, but the food was too expensive to us. We realized that the place of meant for tourist, so we ask Mas Choki to get us to a local food stall. We arrived back at ur hotel at 9pm and rest for our next trip tomorrow to Kintamani.

Sunway Lagoon on the go!

Since it is still on holiday mood, we went to Sunway Pyramid realx and test our adrenaline level. I guess this is my first trip to an amusement park in five years. The last time I for some of the extreme ride was at Tucson, Arizona.

We went early, at 10 in the morning and there were already many people queing for the tickets. We bought the all park tickets that cost RM75. The rate is for locals, and need to produce the IC card as well. All parks include Water Park, Amusement Park, Wildlife Park, Extreme Park & Scream Park. We tried most of the ride. I realise I'm too old to try some of the extreme ride. One ride was enough for me:p

To the National Zoo

Today we went to Zoo Negara and the weather was good and windy. This was my second time to the National Zoo. Last time I went there, it was raining quite heavily and I can't even see any animals, maybe the all went for shelter.

But this time, we went early, 11 in the morning. The Zoo Negara is located at the MRR2 between Taman Melawati and Ukay Perdana. There were not so many people and no long queues. The ticket is RM20 per person and luckily Ali doesn't need to have a ticket since he is below 3 years old. After we entered the zoo, we had to fork out another RM3 to ride on the tram. I thought last time was free, inclusive of the ticket entrance! Maybe its because of the economic situation where eveything is becoming expensive, and the maintainance of the zoo is affected as well. There were giraffe, tigers, lions and even tortoise! Nice to see the animals, but I think they look sad because of the small area they had.

Ali just love to see the racoon which is just the same he saw at the Aquaria KLCC previously. I was waiting for some show where animals perform but none ever turn up. Maybe next time I should try Zoo Taiping or even Zoo Malacca.

My First Tennis Racket!

My first tennis racket had arrived! I bought it at Lelong.my last Sunday for just RM55 +RM10 for shipping. I think this is the cheapest tennis racket I can get. The brand is Fleet, model X-788. I never heard this brand for tennis racket before, but I now theres badminton rackets under this brand. I tried to google it and found out this is a Malaysian brand. Its cheap, and I hope the quality is good as well. Now can't wait for the next friendly match this Thursday! The last time I played tennis was 5 years ago during my bachelor degree.:)

My First Time at Carl's Jr, Midvalley

I was at Midvalley with Yusuf to get some books for the English class at ASDAF. He invited me to Carl's Jr for lunch. I never had tried Carl's Jr, but he said it had the best burgers in town. Much more better compared to McDonalds ang Burger King.

I ordered the Super Star Burger, which was huge! Bigger compared to a tiny winy Prosperity Burger. Yeah, the taste is better, the patty is nice!

I'm not sure other places in KL which have Carl's Jr, but you can get it at Midvalley, just opposite the GCS Cinema, and next to McDonalds:)

From Sg Siput to Batu Gajah and Back to KL

After visiting one of our ex student at Sg Siput, we took the opportunity to visit an old friend, Nuruddin Bashah, or Din Bashah at Batu Gajah, Perak. Luckily we had the GPS and it was not a problem to reach Nuruddin's place. We arrived there at 8.30pm and Nuruddin were just back home with his wife. They went shopping and prepared delicious fried noodles.

It was nice to have Yusuf and Nuruddin together as we all share the same common. We love charity and social work. Nuruddin is active in Ipoh and Penang, while Yusuf and I in KL. We'll be more focussing on the refugees issue and InsyaAllah next year will be a new chapter for us. More activities to be planned the whole year!

Nasi ayam or chicken rice is one of my favourite dishes for lunch. I had a very nice hailam chicken rice at Anjung Qaseh, located at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur. The souce and sambal is delicious and normally I'll have to plate of rice for this chicken rice. For me, what makes the chicken rice delicious is the souce, sambal. If both of them are good, then the chicken rice would be good as well. It cost only RM4 for the nasi ayam hailam. So for those nasi ayam lovers, you should try nasi ayam hailam from anjung qaseh!

Ikan Bakar Istana Negara

One of my favorite restaurant for ikan bakar (grilled fish) is at the Istana Negara (National Palace) located at Jalan Bellamy, Kuala Lumpur. I tried a few ikan bakar restaurant other places and I think this place is one of the best. There is three ikan bakar restaurant at Jalan Bellamy and I had tried all of them. The third one in the row is the best.

Normally I'll order the grilled squid which is YUMMY! It comes with its spicy souce which you can taste the juice splashing in your mouth! My wife had ikan terubuk bakar (grilled terubuk). I'm not really a fan for grilled fish but pari bakar (grilled sting ray) would be just nice. The price for the grilled squid and griled fish is between RM8 to RM18 according to the size. So if you're in KL or planning to come to KL, you might opt this place for lunch!

Eidiladha 2010

Its been a while I've been blogging in this blog. Just after the Eidiladha, then I got this opportunity to update some of my activities during the eid. Since I had just 1 off day, I decided to celebrate the eid with the orphans from ASDAF. I went to Rumah Titian Kaseh (RTK) as well since its just behind my house, well its about 1 km from my house.

I bought a knife, just incase if they need me to help cut the meat at ASDAF. There were so many people at ASDAF and when I was there, they had already slaughtered six cows! It was so quick and we all help each other to cut the meat out and put it into the plastic bag, 1 kg perbag before distributing it out. The ASDAF kitchen made soup from the qurban meat and it was really delicouse! We had as well the gearbox soup and everyone enjoyed it.

On the second Eid, I went to Kampung Pontos, an indegenous village in Raub, Pahang with a few ASDAF children and the management. We started our journey at 4.30am and arrived at the place at 8am. We slaughtered 22 cows and distributed it to the people at the village.

On the way to the village, there was a landslide but luckily we manage to cross over the road. We had to go back early to avoid from raining. We were worried if its gonna rain, the land slide would become worst and it will be impossible to go back to KL.

What a trip from KL to Penang. It was my first time having a tyre puncture since 2001. I knew one of the tyre had less air but I just decided to ignore it until it got punctured at KM159 North Bound. I was calm enough to just change the tyre, then I realized I didn't manage to open the final nut! There was 4 nut, only three manage to open. I was really tired and felt like breaking my fast as it was 4pm and the sun is till up there and making me sweat. Then I decided to try call Plus Hotline and they came just 5 minutes after the call. Yeah, they're really quick! They help me to loosen the final nut, and used my extra tyre in the my bonnet as the replacement. And it was free! Thanks to Plus Highway for making my day today! Sugar and sugar

The rising price of sugar had been a hot issue for a while just before the incoming Ramadhan. Since the price had gone up, I don't think it will stop people from consuming sugar, as it's essential in almost all Malaysian delicacy. I remembered my last visit to a clinic in Penang, when I saw a poster about the amount of sugar in our daily use. Normally between a can of soda and a can of soy milk, I will opt for soy milk because we all know about the greatness of soy milk. It seems sugar in a can of soy milk in much more compared to a can of soda, especially coca-cola!

Muslim Aid FC vs Kachin Refugees Community (KRC)

Last four years was the last time I played football and this time is for Muslim Aid FC. We were involved with the UNHCR League. The format is almost the same as World Cup, but only 16 teams will be playing for the UNHCR Cup. All the teams are from the refugees community and only the Muslim Aid FC consist of local players. The first game against the Kachin Refugees Community (KRC) went well when we scored the first goal on a counter attack. But since we didn't had enough stamina, we went down 1-3 to KRC. The next game will be after raya on the 19th Sept at the same place, Taman Pudu Ulu. All Muslim Aid FC supporters are invited!

BERLIN (Reuters) - Immigrants have helped give Germany a strong team at the World Cup, the country's Sport Minister Thomas de Maiziere said in a radio interview on Monday.

He said the large number of players of foreign origin in the side was an indication of improving integration in a country of 82 million with a foreign population of about seven million.

"It's tremendous progress -- 11 of the 23 Germany players are from immigrant families," de Maiziere, who is also the Interior Minister, told Deutschlandfunk radio.

"They've worked hard, delivered a great performance. They wanted to become German citizens and they've done that without turning their backs on their home countries," he added. "We've accepted that and they're loved as much as anyone else.

"It's a successful example of integration -- a role model for our country."

The families of Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski came from Poland, Mesut Ozil is of Turkish descent, Sami Khedira's father is from Tunisia, Jerome Boateng's father is Ghanaian and Mario Gomez was born to a Spanish father and German mother.

Guest workers have been coming to Germany for decades but until recently few children of foreigners played for Germany. Before the citizenship law was reformed in 1999, conservative governments had said Germany was not a country of immigrants.

"This soccer team is a successful example of integration," added de Maiziere. "Those who work hard will be accepted and those who have faith (in Germany) will have opportunities."

The national team has been opening itself up since the 1998 World Cup when many in Germany hailed the ethnic diversity of the French side that won the trophy after an all-white German team lost 3-0 to Croatia in the quarter-finals.

New Facelift For Our Lift

Previously our lift at Bandar Baru Sentul is full of vandalism at it really hurt my eyes watching it. With all the nonapprprate drawings and 'mural' as the wall is easily being scratch. Now the office management had done a good work by replacing the wall chrome in color. So I hope the wall is scratch and marker resistance, at least it will look nice without any marks.

Acar Tokbi Superb!

Sejak akhir-akhir ini, susah sangat nak dapatkan acar buah yang sedap. Tapi selepas mendapatkan acar buah yang dibuat oleh nenek seorang kawan, barulah dapat rasa acar buah yang rasanya superb! Sebelum ini kebanyakan acar buah yang sudah saya rasa, tidak cukup umph, yang disediakan masa kenduri kahwin pun jarang yang sedap. Kemungkinan kerana bahan-bahan yang digunakan ini yang amat mempengaruhi rasa acar buah.

A few days back my family and I went to search for new restaurant for our dinner. We went to Sri Rampai Business Park and there were several restaurant but there's restaurant that attract us. Said Ali Restaurant at Jalan Rampai Niaga 5. When I went through the menu, there's nasi goreng tomyam, one of my favourite nasi goreng. So I decided to try. The last time I had a nice nasi goreng tomyam was when I was still studying in UIAM at Siddiq Cafe. Since then, I can't really find a really good nasi goreng tomyam. But this time the nasi goreng tomyam at Said Ali is damn good! Just love it and the price is quite reasonable. Its going to be our favourite dining!

Amir Made us Spaghetti For Lunch!

Tiger Prawn For Lunch

Its just great to be back in my hometown Penang. My father just came back from Kota Kinabalu and he bought a few kilos of tiger prawn (udang harimau). It was so big and fresh and it cost RM60 perkilo in Kota Kinabalu. I knew the price here in Semenanjung may hike up to RM130 perkilo for this jumbo tiger prawn.

My mom did the butter prawn for lunch and it was very tasteful. I could only eat up 4 four of it and end up full already. The taste was juicy and sweet! One day if I got the chance going to Sabah, I'll try to get this tiger prawn for sure:)

Deep Purple in Malaysia!

I had this opportunity to watch Deep Purple Concert at Genting Arena Al Stars. Thanks to Ariff, a friend of mine back in Penang who came to KL for the concert. He had extra tickets since his dad can not make it to KL the same day.

Even though I don't really know about Deep Purple, but I really enjoyed it. The only song I know is Soldier of Fortune but unfortunately they didn't sing that song. Its full of energy, and that is what I like most! They played nearly 15 songs and we can call them veterans and I guess they are famous in the 70s and 80s.

Home Made Siakap 3 rasa

My wife did the siakap 3 rasa (sweet and sour barrumandi) and it was marvelous! The siakap cost less than RM10 and home made cook is always good and healthy.

Work Trip To Bandung part 5

Final day, we went to Tangkuban Parahu, its a dead volcano and the only place in Indonesia where tourist are allowed to visit such place. The scenery was awesome! We went down to Kawah Domas to experience the hot spring and mud massage. It took about half and hour jungle tracking from the car park to the Kawah Domas. I bought the volcano mud and also sulfur and manage to bring it back to Malaysia without any problem at the airport custom!

Work Trip To Bandung part 4

Our fourth day we had went to Nasi Bancakan for lunch. It looks like a kedai nasi kandar, but Indonesia style where you just need to pick any food you want. The food is unic where you can also get ox colon, those siput sedut which is quite different to the Malaysian one and many more.

Work Trip To Bandung part 3

Day 3 we had lunch at Vin's Berry Restaurant, a nice restaurant with great foods. I had nasi goreng steak 3 rasa (can't really remember the name) and it was really delicious! My office mate, Amir had a Sundanese food which was rice covered with banana leaf and grill beef with veggies. And desert, we had ice cream covered with strawberry souce.

We went to Cihampelas for dinner. A restaurant (can't remember the name) with very nice ambient and used only candle light. And this time I had oxtail soup with rice! The food was good and finally I had the sup buntut without thinking the exact meaning in Bahasa. Cihampelas is a place just like the Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur. You can get many kinds of foods from locals to westerns.

Work Trip To Bandung part 2

All I wanted to share is about the foods in Bandung. There are several types ranging from Sundanese, Padang, and Indonesian local dishes. Our partner in Bandung took us to some of the great restaurant in Bandung. My first dish for day 2 is the nasi goreng buntut. Its sounds like something not right, only if its translated in Bahasa. Nasi goreng buntut is actually fried rice with oxtail., or nasi goreng ekor lembu. The food is nice, but actually our partner recommended us to have oxtail sup or sup buntut (euww, the name doesn't sound nice...), but I was not ready to have sup buntut. Just because of the name, I was thinking of a punggung lembu!

We also had karedok for lunch. Its a mix vegetable consist of cucumber, bean sprouts and cabbage. Almost like a rojak in Malaysia.

Work Trip To Bandung part 1

Its my first time visiting Indonesia and the first place to go is Bandung. Quite a nice place and its a shopping heaven for most of the tourist, especially Malaysian. We flew to Bandung on the 2nd May 2010 and a representative of one of our working partners had waited for us at the Husein Sastranegara International Airport, Bandung.

We went straight to De Tropis Hotel which is a small hotel which was really neat with 24 hours wifi! The time in Bandung is just 1 hour early compared to the time in KL. The first food that we had was the sate padang at one of the warung just by the road. The food is good and spicy. We had much more other lovely foods and I'll share more information on these on my next post:)

Money Changer - Where to change?

This Sunday I'll be going to Bandung for a work trip. So as usual, I will need to convert some cash to Rupiah. I got this tips from a friend who works with one of the local bank. In order to convert the cash from Ringgit to Rupiah, or even US Dollar or Euro or Aussie Dollar or any other currency, there will be three options.

The first one is converting at the money changer at the airport. This is the most expensive and you may not get the best deal. For example, 1 million Rupiah may cost me about RM385 at the money changer at the airport.

The second way is by the bank money changer outside the airport. The price is better than the one in the airport. I tried to survey the rates and it is about 1 million Rupiah equivalent to RM375. So you save RM10!

The third way is to get the independent money changer. Which is not govern by the bank. You may get the best rate here. After surveying from these three money changers, the independent money changer offers the best rate. I manage to buy 1 million Rupiah for only RM365, with extra RM20 if compared to the money changer at the airport, or extra RM10 compared to the bank money changer!

so it goes like this

1 million Rupiah = RM365

This tips might only be applicable in Malaysia. I guess on some other part of the world, the money changer can only be handled by the banks. But anyway, remember to keep this tips. Plan your time wisely, and you can spend more!

Press Conference at Delicious

Today I had to attend a press conference at Delicious, Jalan Tun Razak for the Ramli Sarip's Wisdom of Nature (Tafsiran Alam). The Ramli Sarip's crew fetch me at the office and went straight to Delicious at 1pm. I had lasagne for lunch at the food is great! The place is nice and the price is slightly cheaper compared to The Chillies.

During the press conference, other supporting artist such as Misha Omar, Andre Goh and even Man Kidal came as well with Ramli Sarip. We had talks and the reporters were busy to get all the information needed. The pc ended at 5pm with Ramli Sarip performing a song for all the people attended.

Its All About Fraser Hill

A refreshing weekend with my family at Fraser Hill. Actually it was a work trip, but I took the opportunity to bring my family up the hill for a vacation plus work. It was a three hour trip to Fraser Hill. It's supposed to be a two hour trip, but coincidently, the 'penamaan calon' happened to be on the same day at Hulu Selangor. We got stuck at Kuala Kubu Baru nearly one and a half hour.

But nevermind, we got there at 2pm, check in the Silverpark Resort and had lunch which was already prepared for us. The scenery was really nice, its windy and the temperature was 22 degrees (18 degrees at night!). I can see Ali was so excited to be in a new place. He kept looking everywhere, absorbing new things like a sponge. For dinner we had bbq, prepared by the MRA's and Muslim Aid's volunteers. Its quite a nice work trip and its great to avoid the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur. I just loved the fresh air which is hardly to sniff in KL.

I would recommend to visit Fraser Hill, to relax and to have a piece of mind. For the route, should opt for Selayang - Rawang - Kuala Kubu Baru - Fraser Hill (2 hours driving).

Thanks To My Dear Wife

It was my birthday yesterday and my wife took me for an early dinner in Wangsa Walk to taste the delicious marinated lamb chop at TGI Fridays. Even though my schedule was a little bit tight, I manage to squeeze my time to have dinner with my family. We went to Wangsa Walk at 6pm, and luckily there were not so many customer yet. So we ordered the appetizer and meals. Ali had a free meal since he is below 12 years old, well, he's not even 1 year old! So his mom and dad finished it up!

The TGI Fridays's staff had a surprise for me by singing the happy birthday song and ask me to make a wish. They gave a slice of chocolate cake for me to share with my wife. It was so sweet, even Alli was happy. Thanks to my wife for planning this for me and I love my wife so much. Thank Allah for having her for me and a blessing son as well:)

A Trip to Palestine

I was in KLIA with my family. My parents and my two younger brothers will be going to Palestine for vacation. Its going to be my dream to reach there one day. The trip will only allows to be at the al-Aqsa Mosque and not deep into the towns. I fear for my parents safety but I pray everything will go smooth. Other places that they will visit are Jordan, Syria dan Kuwait. InsyaAllah they'll be back in 10 days.

p/s Now only I know that we Malaysians are allowed to visit Palestine.

A family day for this weekend. We went up to Bukit Tinggi yesterday just to enjoy the scenery and the fresh air where it is hardly to sip in the hustle and bustle of KL. Trough the way from Karak, the highway is jam pack from the MRR2 to the Karak Tol until Bukit Tinggi exit. It was already 12 noon when we reach Bukit Tinggi. My mom just loves the botanical garden with all the flowers and herbs while Ali just can't stop starring and looking at everything as seems everything is a new object to him. It was great to have a mini holiday with the family, at least not to think about anything related to work.

Riders Malaya Photoshoot

Last Saturday 2 photoshoot session were held for Riders Malaya Community (RMC). The first one at the Sentul Perdana Community Hall, just across the road from my apartment. Its a review written by the Harian Metro Journalist to cover an article about a few RMC's lady bikers. And in the evening, a photoshoot session for Roda-roda Magazine at Putrajaya. It was quite hot, the view was great!

Just now we had dinner at Al Azmi Garden just behind our apartment. The food is thai authentic and the tomyam is delicious! Now we don't need to go to Niara at Taman Melawati to taste the tomyam chiangmai, we got it all here! The price is almost the same as Niara and the service is quite good. Even though the restaurant is full house, we don't need to wait more than half an hour to get our meals ready. A recommended restaurant who loves Thai delicacy.

RIders Malaya Opening Ride 2010

The opening ride for Riders Malaya Community (RMC) is back! And this time about 85 bikes from many places joined the ride. It was my first convoy this year with all the bikers. The trip to Behrang was a new record for the RMC as more than 100 bikers were involved. It was a great ride and thanks to Moped Riders Community, Kawasaki Club, RXZ Malaysia, the Renegades and many more who had given precious support to ensure the ride goes smooth. Thanks to Yus for sponsoring the bbq and other tasty foods.

Today, not much activity. Yesterday we went to One Utama to get some new cloth for Ali. One Utama is got plenty of choices for baby clothing. Our favorite is FOS Kids and Poney Outlet. Good bargain with good quality!

Today I spent most of my time surfing with Ali. Ali just loves to press the keyboard so I let him sit with me while his mother cooks at the kitchen.

Deq Mok cafe is situated at Sri Rampai, next to Sri Rampai Mosque, opposite a big lake. This cafe was introduced by Mubin. The food is good and the price is quite reasonable. The chicken chop cost only RM10 and the nasi goreng ikan masin cost RM5. The drinks? I love the teh tarik. The place is clean and not so crowded. One day when my parents come to KL, I'll bring them here for lunch. Foods ranging from local to western dishes.

Nuruddin and Wife visit to KL

Nuruddin and his wife, Wardah came to KL to visit us. It was their first trip together as a happily married couple. I took them to Niara for dinner and they really love the tomyam chiangmai. Niara Restaurant is located at Taman Melawati and it is one of my favorite place to have dinner.

A True Story About The Rohingyas

Today I met a a few Rohingya refugees residing in Selayang. These children are one the many students from the Madrasah Hashimiah Rohingya Orphanage. I was told by the principle that these children previously had mother and father. But later after their father started to consume alcohol, the father often loose control and always hit the children. Their mother managed to flee from their house and sent the kids to the Madrasah. Now the 3 kids are staying at the Madrasah Hashimiah with more than 40 other unfortunate children. Muslim Aid will be trying to help them through educational needs with the help from other agencies such as the UNHCR and volunteers. Eid Mubarak and happy birthday to my wife!

Just finished solat sunat raya at our surau apartment. Yesterday I went back home late as I was still receiving calls from people who wanted to participate in the Qurban For Life program by Muslim Aid. I came back home at about 9.30pm realizing that my wife birthday is going to be tomorrow! But still don't have any idea what gift should I give for my lovely wife. This is going to be her first birthday as my wife.

That night while processing some of the qurban form, I still manage to get connected with some of my friends thru facebook and yahoo messenger. I still can't think of anything to get for my wife. I should be back early, or at least to have dinner with my wife, but I can't, since there is still pile of work to be done. Out of a sudden, one of my ex classmate from UIA send a message thru yahoo messenger with Eidiladha and happy birthday wishes to me and my wife. I told him that I need to get something for my wife. he gave me an idea to get a cake!

Yeah! Thats it! At least I can get a cake before coming back home! At Bangsar, there is plenty of choices from Secret Recipe, Baskin Robin or even Haagan Dazs. After work, I quickly drove to Bangsar Village. Secret Recipe don't have much choice, so I went to Hagan Daazs to get an ice cream cake. Strawberry cheese cake was my choice!

And now today, after solat sunat raya, i gave my wife a surprise! A Haagan Dazs birthday cake! Thanks to Zaid for the lovely idea!

Leman Dawi's Cendol

It was my first time trying the Leman Dawi's cendol at Senawang, Negeri Sembilan. Even though my kampung is at Seremban, I didn't even know about this cendol until I went to Felda Jelai with a my office mate. Its quite a popular place where customer can refill the cendol as many time they like! The cendol is also quite cheap, ranging from RM1 to RM2 only. Drinks such as sirap and barley is free, you can even 'bungkus' the drinks as well! The owner is also unique, where he can memorize all facts about Malaysia and even Indonesia! He'll keep talking with all the customer to make sure all the customer are happy.

My First Experience Handling a Blogging Course

I was invited by SMK Jelai Felda principle to give a short course on how to blog to the school students. It was a three day two night course. Nearly 50 students were involved and they were really enthusiastic to learn on how to blog. I brought along my ex practical students from UM to help on the course. It was really a great experience handling it, especially for a sekolah luar bandar.

I'm Smarter Than Einstein?

Today I was at Shah Alam Flee Market. I came across a guy who claim to be the Ketua Saintis Negara. With a blue jubah, the pakcik was demonstrating on how to calculate 'sifir' in various method. Together with were also some photo showing him with Sheikh Muszaphar, and an English man claimed to be a Nobel Price winner. I'm not sure what is he up to, but what I can say that this guy is not crazy as everyone thought.

I learned that being an actor is not that easy. Last Friday I had a recording for Fitrah Kasih live show at my office and at Gombak. 1 plot requires repeating several shots, and if let say theres 10 plots, it might repeat the same shot again and again for several times. A friend of mine, Mubin who was one of the actor did quite a good acting skills. Tomorrow will be another day, shooting at Selayang. Don't forget to watch Fitrah Kasih this Thursday (5 Nov 09), 3pm only at TV1!

A Samad Said with Pyan Habib made a visit to Muslim Aid office today. It was a surprise as I was only expecting Pyan Habib to come. Last time it was Ramli Sarip, but I didn't manage to meet him personally. Pyan Habib who is one of the well known artist had been helping Muslim Aid to promote charity and community development programs to other artists. He even helped Muslim Aid to promote the Qurban For Life (Q4L) program through his blog. Probably he'll bring M. Nasir to join Muslim Aid one day!

My Part Time Tuition

Malaysia’s broadband quality is below par, says Oxford study

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 – Malaysia was ranked a poor 48 out of 66 countries for Internet broadband quality in a study conducted by Oxford University and sponsored by Cisco.

The global study on broadband quality conducted by Oxford’s Said Business School listed Malaysia among countries which had Internet speeds which were “below today’s applications threshold.”

Malaysia is listed in the same category but above countries like the United Arab Emirates, Philippines, Pakistan, Morocco, Vietnam and Indonesia. China, Malta, Brazil and Thailand are among countries just ahead of Malaysia in broadband quality but still in the same low category.

Countries like Singapore, Britain, Australia, Spain, Turkey and the Ukraine were listed above Malaysia as having Internet speeds “meeting needs of today’s applications.”

Switzerland, the United States, Russia, Taiwan and Hong Kong “comfortably enjoy today’s applications. Crucially, Korea, Japan, Sweden, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Netherlands, Denmark and Romania were identified as countries with broadband speeds that were “ready for tomorrow.”

The study was conducted between May and July this year and Broadband Quality Scores (BQS) were awarded based on 24 million records sourced from speed tests.

A similar study conducted last year established that download speeds of 3.75 Mbps and upload of 1 Mbps was the quality requirement needed for today’s applications such as social networking, video steaming, video chatting and file sharing.

For what was classified as “tomorrow’s requirements” speeds of 11.25 Mbps for downloads and 5 Mbps for uploads was needed for visual networking, HD video streaming, consumer telepresence, large file sharing and HD IPTV applications.

According to the study, the research team had found that broadband quality was linked to social and economic benefits and that countries with high broadband quality have broadband on their national agenda.

In a statement earlier today, the DAP’s Lim Kit Siang described the study as confirmation of Malaysia’s unchecked plunge in international IT competitiveness.

“Internationally, broadband quality has moved from one of penetration, i.e. who had broadband connection and who did not, to broadband speed but Malaysia is till bogged down in the initial stage.

“Some six months ago, when Datuk Dr Rais Yatim was also appointed Communications Minister apart from his other portfolios of Information, Culture and Arts, I had called on him to give top priority to turn Malaysia into a broadband power, both in broadband penetration rate as well as in broadband speed if Malaysia is to enhance its competitiveness to take its rightful place in the global arena.

“I had asked what Malaysia’s national average broadband speed was, because nobody was talking about 2Mbps – we are lucky if we get 512 or 256kbps without disruption!”

Malaysians in selected areas will get access to high-speed broadband only by the first quarter of next year.

Residents of Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Bangsar, both in Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam have been promised broadband speeds of 10 Mbps and above under the High-Speed Broadband (HSBB) project.

Residents in high-worth economic zones such as the rest of the Klang Valley and Iskandar Malaysia are expected to get the service later with 1.3 million households expected to have access by 2012.

The HSBB project is a public-private partnership between Telekom Malaysia and the government. Telekom is expected to invest RM8.9 billion of its own funds while the government will put in RM2.4 billion.

Telekom has so far claimed RM290 million from the government for work done.

Malaysia currently lags behind advanced countries in terms of quality and affordability of its broadband offerings, which has been confirmed by the Oxford University study.

While some countries such as Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Sweden and Finland have been enjoying speeds up to 100 Mbps for several years now, most Malaysian still make do with speeds of 1 Mbps or less.

Recently, Singapore, China and Australia have also upped the stakes in this strategic sector and announced massive initiatives to wire up their countries with fibre optics.

This was what happened at a Hypermarket store in Setia Alam Shah Alam. When I was in Penang, I love shopping at this chain hypermarket because normally you won't need to queue quite long. When there is more than two trolleys, they will open another cash counter. But it didn't happened here. You can see the people are frustrated. I tried asking one of the staff to open more counters, but she replied stating that not enough worker!Man! So what is the use you guys having those 'Q-Buster' banners?

Alhamdulillah, me, my mom and my wife work together to make cookies for this Raya. We started at 8 in the morning, and the first batch of Hawaiian Nut Cookies (Famous Amos) had been produced! And more to come!

Famous Amos Cookies For Raya!

Tomorrow I will be helping mom to bake two type of Famous Amos cookies and 1 of it is the Hawaiian Nut Cookie. my mom got this recipe from Maklang, where she got this recipe from a chain email. My mom did try to make this cookie last year and it taste almost the same! So for this year, we'll be baking cookies again for raya. Just now, my wife and I with my mom went to Tanjung to buy the stuff needed. The ingredients itself cost us about RM100 for five set of cookies (1 set = 122 cookies) InsyaAllah by tomorrow, I'll update on our progress making those cookies.

You may try too, here's the recipe. Recipe maybe halved.

2 cups butter
4 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups brown sugar
5 cups blended oatmeal (measure oatmeal & blend in blender to a fine powder)
24 oz. chocolate chips
1 tsp. salt
18 oz. Cadbury bar (grated)
4 eggs
2 tsp. baking powder
3 cups chopped nuts (your choice)
2 tsp. vanilla

Cream the butter and both sugars.
Add eggs and vanilla;
mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda.
Add chocolate chips, Cadbury bar and nuts.
Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet.
bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees.
Makes 122 cookies.

It was a nice day to break fast with old mates back in UIA. I got a call from Mubin inviting me to break fast at KLCC with Imad. Imad who is working woth Exxonmobil and had to work till 7pm. So we agreed to have our meal at KLCC. By 5.30 Mubin and I were already at KLCC. So we had to book tables for berbuka. We had our berbuka at the Chilis. Nice lamb steak, but not that juicy compared to last time I had my dinner there with my wife. Maybe its because of buka puasa, and it was full house!

Just before Ramadhan, my family and I went to a nice restaurant called Intai-intai. The location is at the MRR2, quite near to the Duke link exit. The food is great! But a 2 star service for a good decorated restaurant. So if you're planning to buka puasa for this Ramadhan, this restaurant can be one of the option. But remember to book first!

Second day of Ramadhan, and I'm now in Penang with my family and son. My mom made karipap for buka puasa and I just love it! Its hard to get good quality karipap outside. No more karipap with mince meat but only karipap kentang, or karipap sardin or even karipap angin! Actually karipap angin is a karipap with very few inti inside. I hate that type of karipap!

Another price from Milo!

Another rezeki again. This time is also from Milo. Last month I'd coach the ASDAF futsal team for the futsal Hidup Bola competition held at Sport Planet Ampang. I had sent a photo of them training for the futsal game, and again the photo was chosen to win a futsal ball! Last time the price was bigger but I really appreciate to win again from Milo. Milo often have many type of competition from easy entry by just sending photos without any proof of purchase to filling up forms and slogans. You guys should try, and no one knows if you're lucky!

Alhamdulillah, my wife had just delivered our baby boy, Muhammad Ali at general hospital Penang on the 29th July 2009 at 10.36pm. I had ade a blog for my first child and it will be a journey for him from birth till he grow up. Nasi Kandar Line Clear

Today we had lunch at Nasi Kandar Line Clear. One of the most famous nasi kandar in Penang, located near to Komtar. After having probably the best roti canai in town at Transfer Road, and squirt fried noodle at Padang Kota Lama, its time for the nasi kandar! The Nasi Kandar Line Clear is a bit more cleaner compared to last time I came which was about a year ago. They had put tiles on the wall to make it look neat.

We had plain rice with fried chicken with vegi (taugeh) and kari. Then cendoi and teh tarik. It cost RM17 for two of us.The different of Nasi Kandar Line Clear compared to other nasi kandar is that the food is still hot, as if the food was just cook a minute ago. So for those people out there, don't forget to taste those lovely Nasi Kandar Line Clear, next to Komtar!

Today's breakfast is roti canai at Transfer Road. One of the most famous roti canai in Penang. The roti canai is crispy with the curry and daging masak hitam. The taste?yummy! It cost us RM8 for four roti canai with daging masak hitam, two half boil eggs and two teh tarik. Those people coming to Penang, don't forget to have breakfast at Roti Canai Transfer Road!

Mi Sotong in Penang!

Mi sotong! Or squirt fried noodle, one of the must have food when you're in Penang. It looks like an ordinary fried noodle but with the spicy squirt, it taste lovely! The price for the mi sotong is RM3.50 and the location is at the food stall next to Fort Cornwallis or just near the Padang Kota Lama field.

Other than the mi sotong, you should also try roti canai at Transfer Road, Nasi Kandar Line Clear (not my favaourite), capati with kima (mince meat) near the Masjid Kapitan Keling and the Nasi Kandar Beratur which only open at night, from 1am till 4am. Some people says that the Nasi Kandar Beratur are open during day time, but actually the fact is during the day time, the food is a little bit different compared at night.

1 more week in Penang! Enjoy all the foods then!

Well, starting today till the end of July, I'm going to be in Penang. My wife is due to give birth by next week. So its holiday for me! I rushed out from KL yesterday just after finishing work at 6pm, and arrived kampung Padang Rengas at 9pm. Tok and Pah were already waiting and we had dinner together with some of the fresh durians and rambutan. You can taste the difference between a fresh durian yang baru luruh with the durian in KL!

Next day early in the morning we went to the dusun (food orchard) and search for durian yang sudah luruh. We managed to get 8 durians! Then the tiring part is to get the rambutan from the trees. We got a box full of rambutan to bring back to Penang. And now I'm in Penang, will enjoy the precious time here!

Suppose to be work at Terengganu...

It was supposed to be a one day work trip to Terengganu. Our flight from KL to Kuala Terengganu was as early in the morning, at 7am and our flight back to KL was at 9pm. Since our work had finished at 11 in the morning (suppose to finish at 5pm, but due to some circumstances, the inspection finished early than expected).

The marketing exec of the company we visiting took us around Kuala Terengganu and Marang. At first, we planned to go and see the Masjid Kristal and planning to get some keropok lekor. But when we were at the Pulau Kapas Jetty, thats where the idea pop up! It only takes about 15 minutes boat ride to get to Pulau Kapas, so we grab the opportunity to go to Pulau Kapas. Before that we had lunch first as the food at the island would be a bit expensive, and bought a short pant for swimming and snorkeling. The boat to get to Pulau Kapas cost us RM40 perperson for a return ticket. It was Tuesday, and there were not many tourist but a few of them were orang putih.
